From ‘Spark Joy’ to Stuck: Why DIY Decluttering Often Falls Flat

If you’ve ever read The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up or binged the Marie Kondo Netflix series, you’ve probably felt that burst of motivation to declutter everything in sight. And for many, including me, that spark is enough to get started.

But here’s the truth: getting started isn’t the same as staying on track or seeing it through

Studies show that while 80% of people feel motivated immediately after reading a self-help book, only 10% actually implement significant, lasting change without additional support (Norcross et al., 2000). It’s not because the book or instruction isn’t good—it’s because life is busy, emotions are messy, and change is hard.

Self-help gives us knowledge. Coaching gives us momentum

When you work with a certified KonMari Consultant, it’s not just about folding socks a certain way—it’s about being gently guided through decision-making, accountability, and self-discovery. It’s about recognising where, and why, you’re stuck and finding compassionate, practical and effective ways forward.

In fact, research in human psychology consistently shows that goal-setting is more effective when shared with someone else. One study found that people who just sent regular updates to a friend or coach were 76% more likely to achieve their goals than those who kept them to themselves (Matthews, 2015).

There’s nothing wrong with starting your journey solo—but if you’ve found yourself re-reading the same chapter or feeling overwhelmed before you’ve even opened the first drawer, you’re not alone. Sometimes what we need isn’t more information—it’s encouragement, accountability, and a personalised approach. Here are some things my clients said;

“Usually, I’d have thought of a hundred reasons not to start. Makes such a difference having you here to keep me going!”

“Just having someone to guide me through this really helps! Can’t believe I’ve done all of this!”

“This category was a tough one. Would have just kept putting it off if you weren’t here. Was much easier than I thought. Feels absolutely fantastic to have done it!”

Whether it’s one-to-one sessions or a group workshop, I’m here to help you turn that initial spark of inspiration into long-lasting change.

Because your home, and your mind, deserve more than good intentions. They deserve real transformation.
